Merck Sharpe and Dohme invests in Ireland plant

25th March 2009

Merck Sharpe and Dohme (MSD) is delighted to deepen its roots further in Ireland, it has claimed.

This comment came from Dr Michael Thien, vice-president of science, technology and global pharmaceutical commercialisation at the firm’s manufacturing division, after it was announced a further 20 million euros (18.4 million pounds) would be invested in the construction of its new vaccines and biologics facility in Carlow.

As a result of the additional finance ? now taking the total funding from the business up to 220 million euros ? 160 extra construction jobs will be created this year.

The facility, which is expected to be completed by 2011, will employ around 170 staff and Dr Thien explained the investment shows MSD’s commitment at placing Ireland at the forefront of its plans.

“This 20 million euros additional investment in Carlow will take our biologics facility to the next level,” he commented.

“Biologics is a central part of the future, both for us as a company and for public health around the globe.”

In the UK, the company has four locations ? Hoddeson, Cramlington, Stockley Park and London.
