Merck Sharpe and Dohme launches support kit for diabetic Muslims

13th July 2011

Merck Sharpe and Dohme has introduced a new support kit for Muslim diabetes patients who are planning to fast during Ramadan.

The company has collaborated with the South Asian Health Foundation to launch The Facts About Fasting During Ramadan, which will help those with type 2 diabetes to manage their medical condition during the religious event.

It provides tools such as a blood sugar tracker and a Ramadan calendar for planning food intake and medication use, as well as advice from the American Diabetes Association on how to address any potential issues.

This information is being provided due to the fact that changes in eating patterns and reduced food consumption can lead to complications among diabetes patients.

Dr Wasim Hanif, chairman of the diabetes working group at the South Asian Health Foundation, said: "As the prevalence of type 2 diabetes is increasing in the Muslim community in the UK, the issues around fasting during Ramadan need to be addressed."

Earlier this week, the company announced a new collaboration with two US universities that will see it research new methods of combating HIV.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-800620065-ADNFCR
