Merck Sharpe and Dohme to launch clinical trial network

4th June 2010

Merck Sharpe and Dohme is launching a new global clinical trial network to support its research into new cancer drugs and vaccines.

The Merck Oncology Collaborative Trials Network will consist of a number of cancer research centres around the world, which will partner with the pharmaceutical firm to conduct between 30 and 40 clinical studies each year.

Around 1,200 patients are expected to be enrolled by the network annually, while infrastructure is currently being put in place to help consolidate data on specimen testing, imaging testing and patient outcomes.

It is hoped that the new network will allow trials of promising new compounds to be conducted in an efficient manner, eliminating the bureaucracy and coordination issues which often impede such studies.

Dr Gary Gilliland, senior vice-president of Merck Research Laboratories and oncology franchise head, said: “Merck has strengthened its commitment to accelerating drug and vaccine development for people with cancer and this unique network is a cornerstone of our strategy.”

Earlier this week, Merck Sharpe and Dohme published trial data demonstrating the efficacy of a new treatment regime for chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting.
