Merck ‘to seek international comms support for oncology business’

19th December 2016

Merck is seeking international PR support to help bolster the corporate reputation of its oncology unit, according to a new report.

A seven-figure brief has been released to several global PR networks, according to The Holmes Report, with a focus on the key UK and US markets. The aim will be to increase the profile of its cancer treatments and research.

Currently, around half of Merck’s revenues are generated by its pharmaceutical business, with oncology considered a key part of its therapeutic focus. The cancer unit has not released a new product in several years, but is currently preparing to launch avelumab, a skin cancer drug produced in partnership with Pfizer.

With this therapy having been granted priority review status by the US Food and Drug Administration, the company hopes to be well-equipped to tackle an expected increase in cancer rates in many parts of the world.

Previously, Merck worked with Ogilvy PR on a project basis to redefine its corporate positioning around life expectancy. It also uses a variety of PR firms around the world.
