Merck to support WuXi Biologics in equipping new plant in Shanghai

Merck has been appointed by WuXi Biologics to help accelerate the development of biologic products at a pilot plant in Shanghai.

The integrated biologics technology platform company has selected Merck to provide its Mobius single-use systems and technologies to equip its non-GMP pilot plant, which helps WuXi customers to accelerate development of biopharmaceutical products.

Officially inaugurated on February 15th by both companies, the plant uses Mobius single-use products across the entire upstream and downstream workflow, including buffer and media preparation, fed-batch and perfusion bioreactors, clarification, chromatography, virus clearance, ultrafiltration/diafiltration, formulation and fill.

Implementing a single-use workflow offers a range of benefits, including increased efficiency and greater ease of use.

Daniel Stamm, head of global commercial process solutions for Merck's life science business, said: "Incorporation of our Mobius single-use technologies in this new facility will help WuXi Biologics strengthen robust processes and accelerate progress from pilot to commercial scale."

This comes after Merck opened a new facility in Spain dedicated to the manufacture of the pharmaceutical excipient meglumine last month.
