Merck wins Scotland’s Life Science Award for community engagement
Merck has been presented with a prestigious accolade recognising its commitment to community engagement in Scotland.
The company won the 2017 Scotland's Life Science Award for outstanding achievements in community engagement. The industry awards scheme has been run for 17 years by Scottish Enterprise, with around 50 to 60 nominations received across several categories each year.
In 2016, Merck's life science business delivered science lessons to more than 1,250 students in the Glasgow and Stirling areas through the SPARK scheme, which provides community service opportunities for its 19,000 global life science employees.
The company also collaborated with the Glasgow Science Centre to deliver science, technology, engineering and mathematics education, while supporting staff to take part in various fundraising activities, including sports days and health promotion days.
It has longstanding relationships with several charities in Scotland, including Glasgow City Mission, Glasgow Children's Hospital Charity and Beatson Cancer Charity.
David McClelland, head of EU biologics operations for Merck's life science division, said: "This award reflects our ongoing commitment to provide volunteer programmes that benefit the communities in which we operate."
