Merial and IDRI enter new vaccine research collaboration

19th July 2010

Merial has entered into a new research partnership with the not-for-profit biotechnology organisation the Infectious Disease Research Institute (IDRI).

The agreement will see the organisations ally to create new vaccine treatments for animals, with Merial set to utilise proprietary IDRI subunit antigens and adjuvant in a forthcoming drug product.

In addition, the agreement will see Merial provide funding to IDRI to conduct research into how the two organisations’ combined technologies could be utilised in second-generation vaccines.

Merial’s Dr Laurent Fischer will lead the new research alongside Dr Ajay Bhatia of IDRI.

Dr Ellen De Brabander, Merial’s chief scientific officer and head of global research and development, said: “Merial is very much enthused by the chance to exploit in animal health some of the scientific breakthroughs emerging from IDRI’s research.”

Last month, Merial issued a warning to farmers in the UK over the risk that lungworm can pose to livestock, particularly during the summer months.
