Merial launches new swine influenza vaccine in UK

24th May 2010

Merial has launched Gripovac3, a new vaccine for swine influenza, at the UK’s annual Pig and Poultry Fair.

The animal health company’s new drug is designed to combat viral lung load and clinical signs of the H1N1, H3N2 and H1N2 strains of the disease, all of which are currently active in the UK.

It has been shown in studies to provide broad cross-protection against many strains of the illness present in Europe and can be administered to pigs at various stages of production.

Merial veterinary advisor Ricardo Neto stated that the launch of this preventative treatment is important due to the continued threat the disease poses to UK businesses.

He said: “At the present time it is very difficult to estimate the true prevalence of swine influenza. The number of confirmed cases is small, but this is almost certainly due to under-reporting.”

Merial is currently in the process of a merger deal with Intervet/Schering-Plough, a move which will create one of the world’s largest animal health companies.
