Merial ownership transfers from Sanofi to Boehringer Ingelheim

17th January 2017

Merial has been acquired by Boehringer Ingelheim, which has completed a large-scale asset swap deal with Merial's previous parent company Sanofi.

The animal health company has been purchased by Boehringer Ingelheim in exchange for its consumer healthcare business, which is now owned by Sanofi, following the successful closure of the deal in most markets on January 1st.

Exclusive negotiations between Boehringer Ingelheim and Sanofi commenced in December 2015, with the strategic transaction deal signed in June 2016. Preparation for the transfer and integration of the new business units has been ongoing for several months.

The new-look Boehringer Ingelheim animal health business unit will be headed by Dr Joachim Hasenmaier following this takeover.

Hubertus von Baumbach, chairman of the board of managing directors of Boehringer Ingelheim, said: "The combined strength of the two organisations will improve Boehringer Ingelheim's competitiveness in the animal health business segment that is so strategically important to our company."

The closing of the deal in Mexico and India will be delayed for a short time, pending receipt of certain regulatory approvals, but both are expected to close in early 2017.
