Merial receives go-ahead to import equine herpes vaccine

27th May 2016

Merial has been given the green light to import and supply a European-licensed vaccine for equine inactivated herpes, as there is no licensed alternative available in the UK.

The Wholesale Dealer Import Certificate is valid for as long as there remains a lack of an officially licensed alternative, and will help UK horse owners protect their animals against a potentially debilitating disease.

Equine herpes can infect the respiratory tract, leading to fever, fatigue, anorexia, nasal discharge and coughing, as well as compromising the health of newborn foals.

The vaccine will be available to order directly from Merial on receipt of a special import certificate (SIC) issued by the Veterinary Medicines Directorate to a named vet.

This SIC is only required once but needs to accommodate all potential doses required, thus allowing Merial to supply to direct orders from the practice.

Merial provides a wide range of equine health products and is constantly broadening its portfolio, having launched an updated version of its equine influenza vaccine ProteqFlu in the UK earlier this year.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-801819346-ADNFCR
