Millennials ‘set to be the most overweight generation’
Around seven in ten millennials – the generation of Britons born in the 1980s and 1990s – will be overweight or obese by the time they reach the 35 to 44 age bracket, Cancer Research UK has predicted.
The increased figure compares with around half of baby boomers – those born in the first decade after the Second World War.
This could have a significant impact on a range of health issues, including cancer levels.
Alison Cox from Cancer Research UK explained: "Being overweight is the UK’s biggest preventable cause of cancer after smoking, but most people don’t know about this substantial risk."
The organisation noted that 13 types of cancer are linked to obesity, including breast, bowel and kidney cancer. However, it noted, just 15 percent of people are aware of the link.
Ms Cox said the government has a role to play in curbing the rise of obesity, calling for a ban to be imposed on adverts for 'junk' food before 9pm in the evening.
