Millipore and Gen-Probe launch real time test for detecting microbial contamination

9th January 2008

Millipore has teamed with Gen-Probe to launch a range of faster, sensitive and more robust tests for detecting contaminants in pharmaceutical and biotechnology manufacturing processes.

The first product from the range, the MilliPROBE system, is the first solution of its kind for biopharmaceutical manufacturing, according to the life-science leader.

Combining Millipore’s sample prep methodologies with Gen-Probe’s proven nucleic acid technologies the new product delivers "both speed and sensitivity in one microbial screening tool".

Millipore claims that by utilising Real-Time Transcription-Mediated Amplification (TMA) technology, the MilliPROBE can detect targeted microbial contamination within hours compared to the weeks or days usually needed.

The company emphasises that this will allow manufacturers to take corrective action earlier in the production process, ultimately improving the quality of the final product.

Martin Madaus, chairman and chief executive officer of Millipore, said: "For the first time, Millipore’s biotechnology and pharmaceutical customers have a viable alternative to culture-based tests that can take several days to generate results.

"We are excited about the progress we have made in our collaboration with Gen-Probe and we look forward to developing additional assays using the MilliPROBE system over the next few years."
