More than one-third of mothers ‘experience mental health issues’
A new public survey has shed light on the regularity with which UK mothers experience mental health issues due to the responsibilities of parenthood.
An online poll of 1,800 British parents conducted by BBC Radio 5 Live and YouGov has revealed that more than one-third of mothers have experienced mental health issues related to parenthood, as well as 17 percent of fathers.
More than two-thirds of the affected mothers had to seek professional help due to conditions such as acute stress, severe anxiety and postpartum depression, with 60 percent seeking emotional support from friends, 56 percent from their partner and 18 percent from online sources.
The report revealed that social issues may be exacerbating these problems, with 14 percent of mothers saying they have been criticised by strangers for their parenting, higher than the five percent figure for fathers.
Mothers were shown to receive most criticism of their parenting from their own parents, with 26 percent experiencing this, with 24 percent seeing similar attitudes from their spouse or partner and 18 percent from other family members.
It was also shown that about 30 percent of mothers felt discriminated against at work due to being a parent, compared with 14 percent of working fathers.
