Most pharmacies meet Quality Payment Scheme criteria

21st March 2018

More than 90 percent of pharmacies across England achieved financial rewards by meeting criteria under the Quality Payment Scheme (QPS) in 2017-18, according to data from the NHS Business Services Authority.

Introduced by the Department of Health as part of the Community Pharmacy Contractual Framework, the QPS offered payments to community pharmacies that met certain gateway and quality criteria.

A pot of GBP 75 million was made available in 2017-18, with each point earned equating to a payment of GBP 64.

Almost 8,000 participating pharmacies achieved maximum points against quality criteria when reviewed in April and November.

Key figures showed that approximately 12,500 high-risk asthma patients were identified and referred for review, while almost 11,000 pharmacies have increased their use of summary care records to support clinical care.

Alastair Buxton, director of NHS services at the Pharmaceutical Services Negotiating Committee, said engagement with the QPS has been "phenomenal".

"We are delighted to see such high levels of participation; the data published today is a testament to their hard work and commitment to continuously improving the quality of the services they provide to patients and the public," he added.
