MP warns of child oral health ‘crisis’ in Bradford

16th March 2018

The city of Bradford in West Yorkshire has reached "crisis point" where oral health and dentistry services for children are concerned, according to a local MP.

Judith Cummins, member of parliament for Bradford South, told the Telegraph and Argus that the district's youngest patients and their parents are facing issues such as tooth decay and lack of access to NHS dentists.

This has contributed to an increase in extractions, with a Freedom of Information request to the Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust showing that, between April and December 2016, 190 children were admitted to hospital to have teeth taken out.

Ms Cummins noted that, in addition to the emotional and physical distress for the child, this creates a financial cost for the NHS.

She added: "I think we are at a crisis point in terms of dentistry and oral health for children in Bradford."

The MP called on the government to acknowledge the problem in this particular part of the country and to take action to improve availability and awareness of NHS dental services.
