MPs: impact of Brexit on health and social care must be accounted for
An inquiry into the effect of Brexit on health and social care has called for the next government to consider the issue a matter of top priority.
The Health Committee investigation, which has been curtailed by the general election, has urged the Department of Health to produce a comprehensive list of health-related issues that will require contingency planning due to the Brexit process.
Concerns were raised over the amount of resources currently being dedicated to this preparation, as well as the need for greater consultation with external stakeholders and the devolved administrations, given the complexity of the challenges at hand.
It was noted, for example, that the process is causing considerable uncertainty and morale problems for European staff working for the NHS, with the future of the health service dependent on these workers being retained.
The committee also urged the next government not to underestimate the impact Brexit will have on those relying on the EU's reciprocal healthcare arrangements, including British travellers and holidaymakers, as well as retired UK citizens currently living in the EU.
