MPs launch new inquiry into impact and benefits of e-cigarettes
The Commons Science and Technology Committee has launched a new review that aims to analyse the impact and benefits of e-cigarettes.
With e-cigarettes becoming increasingly common as an alternative to smoking tobacco, the committee is seeking to determine their impact on human health, specifically in terms of whether they are a suitable smoking cessation aid, and the implications of their use among young people.
Efforts will also be made to review the current regulatory approach to these products and their advertising, comparing standard practice in the UK to other European nations.
Additionally, the committee will look at the economic impact of the UK’s e-cigarette industry, with a focus on the effect on public finances and how the rise in e-cigarette consumption could affect NHS costs.
Norman Lamb, chair of the Science and Technology Committee, said: "We want to understand where the gaps are in the evidence base, the impact of the regulations, and the implications of this growing industry on NHS costs and the UK's public finances."
Written submissions for the review will be accepted by the committee from now until December 8th.
