MSD Animal Health ‘could be weeks away from Schmallenberg vaccine’

9th November 2012

MSD Animal Health could be ready to make its new Schmallenberg virus vaccine commercially available in a matter of weeks.

This is according to a new report from Farmers Weekly, which cites industry sources as claiming that the company has already submitted an application for regulatory approval and licensing of the vaccine.

Studies of the vaccine have already shown that the drug can offer protection to pregnant calves, lambs and ewes against the disease, which causes death and deformities in unborn cattle and sheep.

Following research by the Royal Veterinary College and the Institute for Animal Health, it was confirmed in August 2012 that the virus has over-wintered and is currently circulating in the UK.

Should the new report prove accurate, MSD Animal Health could have its vaccine ready for sale by mid-November.

The anonymous source said: "MSD has 1,500 litres of vaccine already produced and bottled. Once the confirmation comes through, they have just got to go through the labelling process and make sure the vaccine is bottled."ADNFCR-8000103-ID-801485468-ADNFCR
