MSD Animal Health joins Global Salmon Initiative
MSD Animal Health has announced its membership of the Global Salmon Initiative (GSI), a leadership project established in 2013 by global farmed salmon producers.
Comprising 12 companies representing approximately 50 percent of the global salmon production industry, the aim of GSI is to improve standards of sustainability in salmon farming, while continuing to provide healthy protein-rich food for a growing global population.
By 2050, it is estimated that the world's population will increase by 34 percent to 9.1 billion people, a trend that will result in the doubling of demand for global food production, including fish protein.
MSD Animal Health has pledged to support global salmon production by offering a wide range of products and services for the environmentally and economically sustainable control of major aquaculture diseases.
Dr Chris Beattie, head of global aquaculture at MSD Animal Health, said: "We align very closely with GSI's vision of providing a highly sustainable source of healthy protein to feed a growing global population, while minimising its environmental footprint."
The UN Food and Agriculture Organization estimates that around one billion people worldwide rely on fish as their primary source of animal protein.
