MSD Animal Health launches new Exzolt treatment for poultry red mite infestations

27th September 2017

MSD Animal Health has announced the European launch of a new treatment that eliminates poultry red mites in production houses.

Exzolt is the first systemic treatment for poultry red mite infestations and is designed for use in production houses of any size or type, including free range. It is administered via drinking water, thus improving welfare by reducing stress associated with other forms of treatment.

In clinical studies, Exzolt was shown to virtually eliminate poultry red mites in production houses, as well as being safe for the birds and for human handling. No significant adverse events were reported.

Dr Taylor Barbosa, head of poultry at MSD Animal Health, said: "It is important to effectively treat poultry red mites as infestations not only affect the birds' welfare, but also result in significant economic losses for poultry producers."

Poultry red mites are one of the top five causes of financial loss in European layer and breeder operations, as infestations can harm reproductive potential in males, egg production in females and weight gain in young birds.

The total annual cost of poultry red mite infestations in the European egg laying industry is estimated to be 360 million euros (315.51 million pounds), with more than 430 million hens suffering from infestations.
