MSD Animal Health provides donation to Japanese animal sector

11th August 2011

MSD Animal Health has provided a cash donation to help support the recovery of the Japanese animal sector, following the earthquake that struck the country earlier this year.

A contribution of $30,000 (18,500 pounds) has been made available to the Japan Veterinary Medical Association, the Japan Pork Producers Association and the Regional Livestock Industry Promotional Council to assist with the redevelopment of the nation's infrastructure.

The money will be used for purposes such as re-establishing pet shelter and veterinary facilities, as well as helping businesses affected by property destruction and the disruption caused by evacuation orders.

It is estimated that the coastal prefectures struck by the earthquake and subsequent tsunami were responsible for around 17 percent of Japan's total livestock production before the disaster.

Leopoldo Nanni, vice-president and head of Asia-Pacific and sub-Saharan Africa at MSD Animal Health, said: "We trust that via this donation we can contribute to the Japanese society, enabling them to overcome this difficult situation."

MSD Animal Health is the new name for Intervet/Schering-Plough, having been rebranded by parent company Merck Sharpe and Dohme in June 2011.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-800697403-ADNFCR
