MSD extends claims enrolment deadline

2nd May 2008

Merck Sharp & Dohme (MSD) has extended the walk away enrolment deadline for claimants who wish to be part of the programme to settle US state and federal myocardial infarction (MI) and ischemic stroke (IS) claims filed against the company to June 30th 2008, the company has announced.

MSD said it decided on the move in order to give claimants and their counsel more time to complete the enrolment procedure, as well as giving the claims administrator and itself more time to verify enrolments received so far.

The new deadline will apply to claimants who either filled or tolled their cases on or before November 9th of last year, the company said.

It added that it has received a “large volume” of enrolments thus far and it is confident that once they have been checked, it will meet and exceed the target of 85 per cent of thresholds for all claims, which would oblige the company to pay instalments totalling $4.85 billion (2.44 billion pounds) into the resolution fund.

By the end of March, the claims administrator said over 28,250 eligible MI claimants and more than 16,750 eligible IS claimants had started enrolment.

Established in 1891, MSD discovers, manufacturers and markets a range of vaccines and medicines aimed at address unmet medical needs.
