National Pandemic Flu Services site launches

24th July 2009

A new website has been launched by the government that aims to provide information to the public on swine flu symptoms.

The National Pandemic Flu Service, launched yesterday by health secretary Andy Burnham, allows people to check their symptoms and gain a unique number that will grant them access to antivirals.

In addition to the website, there are also hotline and textphone numbers available.

Mr Burnham said that the service will enable people to diagnose themselves as quickly as possible, relieving strain on GPs.

However, he added that those who have underlying health conditions and are worried that they may have contracted swine flu should still speak to their doctors.

Since its launch, the service’s website has proved hugely popular, receiving more than nine million hits an hour.

Within minutes of launching, the site succumbed to the high levels of traffic and blocked visitors. The government has asserted that it is working to ensure the portal will meet demand.
