National Smile Month 2015 launches across UK

20th May 2015

The British Dental Health Foundation has marked the commencement of National Smile Month this week, with the aim of promoting the importance of oral health nationwide.

More than 3,500 hospitals, dental practices and other healthcare organisations have pledged their support for the annual awareness campaign, which kicked off on May 18th and will run until June 18th.

The initiative centres on three key messages – the need to brush for two minutes twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, cut down on sugary foods and drinks and visit the dentist regularly.

It is expected to reach in excess of half a million patients over the campaign period, with companies and brands such as Oral-B, Invisalign, Wrigley, Philips, Denplan and Tepe all offering support.

Dr Nigel Carter, chief executive of the British Dental Health Foundation, said: "Heart disease, heart attacks, diabetes, strokes and low-birthweight babies have all been linked to poor oral health, so it's important that we don't overlook ours."

This is one of two major campaigns run by the charity each year, with Mouth Cancer Action Month to follow in November.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-801788218-ADNFCR
