Nearly 3.5m patients ‘may lose family doctor due to Brexit’
An exodus of GPs from the NHS following Brexit could result in a number of people losing their family doctors, according to a report from the Royal College of GPs.
New analysis from the college has indicated that an estimated 2,137 GPs working in the UK are from the EU, providing care for more than 3.46 million patients in total.
This constitutes five percent of the workforce in England, four percent in Scotland and Wales, and 11 percent in Northern Ireland. As such, a significant quantity of people could lose access to care if these professionals are forced to leave the country.
The royal college also conducted a YouGov survey indicating that 59 percent of people think GPs from the EU working in the UK should have their position guaranteed from the outset of Brexit negotiations, while 56 percent favour allowing the continued immigration of people who come to the country to work as GPs.
Professor Helen Stokes-Lampard, chair of the Royal College of GPs, said: "It is essential that EU workers in general practice and across the health service continue to feel welcome, valued, and that their future is secure."
