New accelerated NHS access scheme announced for new medicines

3rd November 2017

The government has announced a new fast-track route for breakthrough medicines and technologies to be made available for NHS patients.

From April 2018, a new accelerated access pathway will be established to help ensure that products with the greatest potential to change lives are made available within the NHS up to four years earlier than is currently possible.

This will be accomplished by reducing the time it takes to negotiate evaluation and financial approvals before the NHS can purchase the products. A selected number of products will receive breakthrough designation each year.

Sir Andrew Witty, former chief executive of GlaxoSmithKline, will lead a new group called the Accelerated Access Collaborative to highlight which products should be given this designation, drawing on advice from patients, clinicians and industry partners.

Health minister Lord O'Shaughnessy said: "Today's new measures will not only benefit patients by improving how quickly and easily we can get innovative products from the lab to the bedside, but will guarantee future collaboration between the life sciences sector and the NHS post-Brexit."
