New Be Clear on Cancer campaign highlights respiratory symptoms
Public Health England has launched a new national Be Clear on Cancer campaign to raise awareness of symptoms of lung cancer, lung disease and heart disease.
Currently, around 1.7 million people are estimated to be living with undiagnosed lung cancer, lung disease or heart disease, making all three leading causes of death. As such, the government is keen for those displaying symptoms to seek prompt medical attention.
Key indicators of these diseases include persistent coughs or breathlessness, with men and women over the age of 50 highlighted as being at the greatest risk, which is why the campaign will target them primarily.
Earlier diagnosis of these conditions has the potential to save lives, as well as improving the quality of life of those with chronic conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Professor Kevin Fenton, Public Health England's national director for health and wellbeing, said: "This campaign will help people recognise the symptoms and encourage them to seek help, potentially saving lives from what are three of the biggest causes of death in England."
