New campaign to raise awareness of lung cancer and heart disease
Public Health England has launched a new campaign to raise awareness of the symptoms of lung cancer, heart disease and other lung diseases.
The new Be Clear on Cancer campaign is designed to prompt people to spot the telltale signs of these conditions – which are among the leading causes of death in England – and consult their doctors at the earliest opportunity.
These diseases cause more than 150,000 deaths in England each year, but early diagnosis can save lives and improve the quality of life for people surviving with conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Examples of early warning symptoms include getting out of breath when engaging in routine tasks, having a cough that has lasted for three weeks or more, or persistent breathlessness.
The campaign is also calling on people to look out for signs of these problems among their loved ones, and to encourage friends and family to act.
Julia Verne, clinical lead for Public Health England, said: "Breathlessness and a persistent cough are symptoms that can be easily ignored or put down to getting older … But these symptoms can be warning signs and it is really important to get them checked out."
