New contract changes promise personalised GP care for all
Every patient in England will get a named and accountable GP assigned to them under newly-announced changes to the GP contract.
Unveiled by the Department of Health this week, the reforms will see all 53.9 million people in England receive a dedicated GP who is personally accountable for coordinating their care. A similar measure was introduced for over-75s last year.
Other key changes to the contract will introduce greater transparency on GP salary levels, while also providing patients with more information and appointment booking options online.
Additionally, the Prime Minister's Challenge Fund will be extended to help more practices extended opening hours from 08:00 to 20:00 seven days a week, as well as offering email, phone and Skype consultations.
Health secretary Jeremy Hunt said: "GPs are the bedrock of the NHS and by bringing back a named accountable GP for everyone, we will strengthen the relationship between GPs and their patients."
The announcement met with a mixed response from the Royal College of GPs, which suggested that more investment and recruitment will be needed to make the plans feasible.
