New contract for English dentists

31st January 2008

The changes to the contract for salaried dentists in England are expected to offer a clear career structure, among other benefits.

This is according to Eric Rooney, lead negotiator for NHS Employers and a dental public health consultant.

He said the new contract, which is currently being implemented, will improve the working lives of dentists through offering “a clear and flexible career structure”.

In addition, Mr Rooney added that the contract will “help secure modernised dental services” for patients.

The NHS Employers website states that all existing staff are expected to have moved to the new contract by April 1st.

All new staff who start from February 4th onwards will be on the new contract, the website adds.

Key elements of the contract include a new pay structure that is supported by compulsory yearly appraisals and career development, as well as consisting of three competency bands.

Meanwhile, poor access to NHS dentists has been blamed for large numbers of people dying from mouth cancer.

Speaking to the Independent, Nigel Carter, chief executive of the British Dental Health Foundation, said more needs to be done to ensure people have access to dental care so that cancer could be detected early.
