New crackdown launched to bolster cyber security in healthcare
Critical industries such as healthcare are being targeted in a new government crackdown aimed at bolstering cyber security standards.
Health, energy, transport and water firms could be fined up to GBP 17 million if they fail to implement the most robust safeguards against cyber attacks, while a simple new reporting system is being set up to make it easy to report cyber breaches and IT failures quickly.
These measures will also cover other threats affecting IT such as power outages, hardware failures and environmental hazards, with regulators to assess whether appropriate security measures were in place, and issue legally-binding security instructions or financial penalties where necessary.
The crackdown is being launched partially in response to the WannaCry ransomware attack that crippled NHS services in May 2017, with poor security standards within the health service blamed for the widespread nature of the disruption it caused.
Margot James, minister for digital and the creative industries, said: "We want our essential services and infrastructure to be primed and ready to tackle cyber attacks and be resilient against major disruption to services."
