New data shows benefits of NHS type 2 diabetes prevention programme

15th March 2018

New data from NHS England has indicated that the NHS type 2 diabetes prevention programme is delivering more significant benefits than expected.

The prevention programme, which delivers personalised lifestyle interventions to delay or prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes, has so far seen more than 50 percent of participants complete the scheme after attending at least eight support sessions over a nine-month period.

Patients lost an average of 3.3 kg through the programme, rising to 3.7 kg when excluding those who were already of normal weight and BMI, but were on the programme for other health reasons.

This means patients have been able to lose an average of 1 kg more than originally predicted after receiving guidance on lifestyle choices, advice on how to reduce weight through healthy eating, and opportunities to take part in bespoke physical activity programmes.

Professor Jonathan Valabhji, national clinical director for diabetes and obesity at NHS England, said: "Type 2 diabetes is heavily linked to obesity, and if those on our programme continue to lose weight, as this snapshot suggests, then it is a step in the right direction."
