New data shows fall in average age of UK stroke victims

1st February 2018

New government data has indicated a drop in the average age of people suffering strokes in the UK.

Figures from Public Health England have indicated that 38 percent of first-time strokes now happen in middle-aged adults between the ages of 40 to 69, with more people experiencing a stroke at an earlier age compared to a decade ago.

The average age for males experiencing a stroke has fallen from 71 to 68 years between 2007 and 2016, while for females the average fell from 75 to 73 years.

In order to minimise the impact of strokes across the UK, Public Health England has relaunched its Act FAST campaign, which aims to encourage people to call 999 if they detect any signs of a stroke in themselves or others.

These common symptoms include drooping of the facial muscles on one side of the face, an inability to raise the arms, and the onset of slurred speech.

Professor Julia Verne, a director at Public Health England, said: "While it's often associated with older people, the latest research shows that people are having strokes at a younger age. Everyone needs to be aware of the signs."
