New digital technology project launched to help new mothers with breastfeeding
Public Health England has launched a campaign to support new mothers in carrying on breastfeeding with the help of digital technology.
Delivered as part of the Start4Life project, the Breastfeeding Friend application is designed to encourage parents to adopt healthy behaviours, and is available for free on platforms such as Facebook Messenger and the Amazon Alexa voice service.
Using the latter tool, mothers can ask Alexa questions about breastfeeding, receiving answers and helpful advice tailored to the age of their baby, even when their hands are full.
Viv Bennett, chief nurse at Public Health England, said: "These digital offerings will help guide new parents through their first weeks of breastfeeding and beyond, providing help at any time of the day or night."
This initiative coincides with the launch of a new survey of 1,000 mothers of young children revealing that in hindsight, mothers wish they had been better prepared for breastfeeding.
It has also been shown that almost three-quarters of women start breastfeeding when their child is born, but this drops to just 44 percent after six to eight weeks, meaning breastfeeding rates in England are among the lowest in the world.
