New Ebola case confirmed in Scotland

30th December 2014

A new British case of Ebola has been confirmed after a healthcare worker who had recently travelled to Glasgow from Sierra Leone was diagnosed with the disease.

The patient in question is being transferred for treatment in isolation at the Royal Free hospital in London, with infection control procedures for dealing with cases of imported infectious disease to be enacted.

Although the risk to passengers who took the same flight as the infected individual is considered low, those affected are being contacted and provided with relevant health information.

The UK government is now working with the Scottish government to ensure the patient receives the highest quality of treatment possible, while restating its confidence in the robustness of the relevant NHS systems.

Professor Dame Sally Davies, the NHS chief medical officer, said: "Although a case has been identified, the overall risk to the public continues to be low … The UK system was prepared, and reacted as planned, when this case of Ebola was identified."

More than 70 NHS volunteers have travelled to Sierra Leone to work in British-built treatment centres over the Christmas period, underlining the country's commitment to helping tackle the recent outbreak.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-801767956-ADNFCR
