New figures show rising take-up of NHS mental health therapy

8th December 2017

New data from NHS England have indicated a recent increase in the number of people making use of NHS mental health therapy services.

Thanks to NHS England's Increasing Access to Talking Therapies programme, around 1.4 million people have been referred for NHS talking therapies to treat depression and anxiety, with 965,000 of these going on to start receiving treatment.

This represents a 32,000 rise on patient numbers from the year before, with waiting times decreasing and recovery rates improving in the same timeframe. The number of people recovering from their condition has also increased on the previous 12 months, with over 50 per cent of patients making a recovery in every month of 2017.

It is hoped that expanding access to this type of early intervention will mean mental health conditions are spotted and treated sooner, reducing the need for more intensive and expensive treatments.

Claire Murdoch, NHS England's national director for mental health, said: "Raising standards of care to a consistently high level will take further years of hard work and continued investment."
