New funding announced for NHS transformation projects

The Department of Health has announced the allocation of 350 million pounds in funding to support a series of NHS transformation projects.

Designed to support Sustainability and Transformation Partnerships (STPs) across England, the money will be used to underpin local capital investment schemes in 15 areas of the country.

In Greater Manchester, for example, up to 50 million pounds will be made available to help hospitals deliver significant improvements in urgent and emergency care by concentrating services in four hub sites, which is expected to save around 300 lives each year.

Meanwhile, in Cumbria, between 30 million and 50 million pounds will be used to establish a new cancer centre at Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle, helping to improve access to chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

Funding has been targeted at the strongest and most advanced schemes in the STP categories, based on an assessment of leadership and service performance.

Health secretary Jeremy Hunt said: "This funding will support strong local plans to help the NHS modernise and transform care for patients."
