New funding announced to help hospitals prepare for winter
The government has announced a new allocation of funding to help support NHS emergency services in their preparations for next winter.
An additional 20.74 million pounds has been awarded to 27 hospitals in England, which will come on top of the initial 55.98 million pound package allocated to 70 hospitals in April. The aim will be to ease pressure on accident and emergency departments during the busiest time of the year.
Specifically, the money will help hospitals to prepare to handle the large volumes of patients requiring emergency treatment during the colder months, allowing them to stream patients as they arrive, with a clinician assessing their needs and deciding which care would be most appropriate.
It will also allow hospitals to build GP practices within their emergency care units to attend to patients with less urgent needs.
Health secretary Jeremy Hunt said: "This vital investment will help hospitals change the way they assess and see patients so people are given the most appropriate medical care as quickly as possible."
The overall aim will be to help hospitals hit the target of admitting, transferring or discharging 95 percent of patients within four hours.
