New government plans aim to promote medical staff to senior roles

7th December 2016

The Department of Health has announced new measures that aim to elevate doctors and nurses into positions at the most senior levels of the NHS.

Speaking at the NHS Providers annual conference, health secretary Jeremy Hunt detailed plans for a fast-track programme for doctors and nurses to become future NHS leaders, working alongside world-class universities such as Yale University.

The first students will enrol in September 2017, with programmes to be modelled on a successful programme piloted at Harvard University two years ago. Currently, only one-third of NHS chief executives have a clinical background, a trend the government wishes to address.

Efforts will also be made to increase the number of available places in the NHS graduate scheme, doubling the number next year from 100 to 200, with plans for up to 1,000 places in the future.

Finally, the government will work with Britain's top universities to develop a new NHS-approved Masters of Business Administration.

Mr Hunt said: "These are the changes the NHS needs to see over the next decade if we are to turn warm sentiments about frontline staff into practical improvements that show we truly value their contribution."
