New lens-free microscopes open door for more affordable diagnoses

13th June 2017

A new breakthrough in microscope imaging technology has allowed for the development of lens-free devices that offer performance benefits at a lower cost.

The spectral light-fusion microscope allows of the capture of light field images in full colour, foregoing a lens in favour of AI capabilities and mathematical models of light to develop 3D images at a large scale.

Since the device is able to comprehensively capture light fields, it allows for the creation 3D images that are approximately 100 times larger than the 2D images captured by more traditional microscopes.

Traditionally, this would only be possible by stitching together multiple images, requiring a machine that costs several hundred thousand dollars, rather than the hundreds of dollars needed to create the new system.

It is expected that this will allow researchers to observe the behaviour and interactions of different organisms at a scale that much larger than standard microscopes, aiding the diagnosis of disease.

University of Waterloo researcher Alexander Wong said: "This technology has the potential to make pathology labs more affordable for communities who currently don't have access to conventional equipment."
