New measures announced to halt spread of avian flu
New measures to protect against avian flu that take a targeted approach to controlling the disease have been outlined by the government.
Following the confirmation of a case of H5N8 avian flu in a small flock of chickens at a farm near Haltwhistle, Northumberland, a three km protection zone and a ten km surveillance zone have been put in place around the infected premises.
On a nationwide basis, poultry keepers across England are expected to continue to observe strict biosecurity measures, with housing or netting required in higher-risk areas. Most keepers will still have the option to let birds outside whilst still taking reasonable precautions.
These regulations apply to all poultry keepers, whether they keep a commercial flock or just a few chickens in their back garden.
Chief veterinary officer Nigel Gibbens said: "We believe this is the best approach to control disease, protect birds' welfare and ensure consumers can buy free-range products. As with any disease control measures, these will be kept under review based on the latest situation and up-to-date scientific advice."
It has been deemed that the risk of disease across the country remains high, with current measures likely to remain in place until at least the end of April.
