New measures proposed to enhance young people’s mental health services

5th December 2017

The government has outlined a number of new proposals that aim to enhance services designed to protect children and young people's mental health.

More than 300 million pounds in funding has been made available to support the new measures, which include encouraging all schools and colleges to have a designated senior mental health lead, while also setting up mental health support teams to work with schools.

Additionally, plans are afoot to pilot a new four-week waiting time for young people's NHS mental health services, thereby ensuring that vulnerable youngsters are able to access care in a more timely manner.

Other proposals outlined in a green paper on the subject include the establishment of a new working group examining mental health support for 16 to 25-year-olds, as well as a new report by the chief medical officer on the impact that technology may be having on mental wellbeing.

The consultation on the green paper will run for 13 weeks until March 2nd 2018, after which point the government will consider which of these proposals to put into practice.
