New mental health support to be offered to public sector workers
The government has announced a major new workplace mental health support programme for public sector workers.
NHS and civil service employees will now guarantee tailored in-house mental health support under the new scheme, which will introduce a set of core and enhanced standards to give workers the knowledge, tools and confidence to look after their own mental health.
Specific efforts will be made to offer support to prevent mental illness being caused or worsened by work, and to allow those affected to thrive in the workplace. Employers will also be held to account for delivering these standards by the relevant regulators.
Prime minister Theresa May said the purpose of these efforts will be to "change the way we see mental illness so that striving to improve your mental health – whether at work or at home – is seen as just as positive as improving our physical wellbeing".
This follows a recent independent review which found that around 300,000 people a year are leaving their jobs each year due to mental illness, costing employers up to 42 billion pounds annually.
