New method for creating pill-based vaccines developed

14th March 2018

UK scientists have developed a non-biologic influenza vaccine that can be delivered orally in pill form, a breakthrough that could revolutionise vaccine delivery.

The Cardiff University team have created the world's first synthetic, non-biologic vaccine that not only circumvents the need for injection, but also does not require refrigeration, making it easier to transport and more accessible for populations in developing countries.

Standard vaccines usually work by introducing a safe form of a germ into the body to stimulate an immune response, but this new method uses special 'mirror image' forms of disease-associated proteins to create the same effect in a more stable way.

Having delivered a proof-of-concept in a laboratory setting, researchers will be looking at ways of expanding the approach for the entire population and other diseases. It is likely to take several years before a non-biologic vaccine of this kind could be tested in humans.

Study leader Professor Andrew Sewell from Cardiff University's school of medicine said: "There are many benefits to oral vaccines. Not only would they be great news for people who have a fear of needles, but they can also be much easier to store and transport."
