New NHS energy efficiency schemes outlined

11th November 2013

The government has announced the launch of nearly 70 new NHS energy efficiency schemes across the country, a move that will help to save money and protect the environment.

Around 50 million pounds in funding has been allocated to supporting these projects, which include purchasing electric vehicles, conferencing equipment, new insulation and systems to shut down inactive computers, among many others.

It is expected these initiatives will lead to savings of 13.7 million pounds a year, which would be enough to pay for 18,500 cataract operations or 2,300 hip replacements.

In addition to the financial benefits, these efforts will help to save almost 200 million kilowatts in energy consumption and reduce CO2 emissions by up to 5.6 million tonnes a year.

Health minister Dr Dan Poulter said: "These schemes demonstrate the easy ways our NHS can make improvements to help power hospitals more efficiently, save on energy bills and reduce their carbon emissions."

This follows the announcement of a new NHS procurement strategy earlier this year that could deliver 1.5 billion in savings for the health service.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-801659314-ADNFCR
