New NICE briefing focuses on tackling TB in vulnerable populations

26th September 2013

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has issued a new briefing that aims to help local authorities across the country to tackle tuberculosis (TB) among vulnerable groups.

Endorsed by Public Health England, the briefing supports a system-wide approach to ensuring relevant health, welfare and social services are linked together to improve health and social outcomes for vulnerable people, including the homeless.

For example, councils were advised to work with the NHS and Public Health England to support informed commissioning and ensure services reflect the needs of their area, while rapid access to TB clinics should be provided for vulnerable groups.

It was also advised that further resources be allocated to running education and awareness campaigns to ensure professionals and members of the public understand the threat posed by the disease.

Professor Mike Kelly, director of the centre for public health at NICE, said: "Along with a raft of wider recommendations, this briefing can help local authorities and partner organisations to tackle tuberculosis and improve general health outcomes."

Public Health England's most recent annual TB report showed 8,751 cases of the disease were reported in the UK in 2012, with individuals from ethnic minority groups being at greatest risk.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-801642542-ADNFCR
