New plans to tackle NHS research bureaucracy announced
NHS England has announced that it will be streamlining and simplifying the current NHS national research strategy in order to reduce bureaucracy.
The process of setting up trials across multiple sites is set to be standardised to make it easier to develop treatments for rare cancers and other complex conditions, while the steps needed to claim back excess treatment costs will also be reconsidered.
Additionally, NHS England will seek views on how longstanding frustrations with the system can be addressed in a way that benefits the industry, researchers and patients alike, with any unnecessary barriers to innovation removed.
At present, studies taking place across more than one hospital require all sites to agree their own terms with researchers, with NHS England planning to scrap this setup in favour of a common set of terms and conditions.
Meanwhile, the process for claiming back expenses accrued by specialist services will be simplified and linked with the effective research networks that exist across England.
A statement from the organisation said: "The main goal of the consultation will be to simplify and standardise as much of the process as possible, to streamline the process for getting research projects up and running."
