New plans to transform mental health support announced

10th January 2017

The government has announced a wide-ranging series of measures designed to significantly enhance the standard of care offered to people with mental health problems.

Outlined by prime minister Theresa May, the plans are designed to enhance the standard of mental health support in schools, workplaces and communities, with the aim of ensuring mental and physical health issues are given equal standing in future.

Schools will receive mental health first aid training, while a new partnership with employers is to be launched to improve mental health support in the workplace. Efforts will also be made to explore alternatives to hospital to support people in the community, including crisis cafes and community clinics.

Further steps include increased investment in digital mental health services, and a renewed effort to tackle systemic injustices that people with mental health problems currently face.

Mrs May said: "This is a historic opportunity to right a wrong and give people deserving of compassion and support the attention and treatment they deserve."
