New programme to increase number of pharmacists working in GP practices

19th April 2017

The number of GP surgery-based clinical pharmacists in England is set to be increased through a new scheme from NHS England.

More than 700 additional practices across the country will have their own on-site pharmacist based at the premises under this programme, which will cover up to six million patients on a national basis.

These pharmacists will work as part of the general practice team by offering expertise on day-to-day medicine issues and providing consultations with patients directly, including offering extra help to manage long-term conditions such as high blood pressure.

They will also offer advice for those on multiple medications and provide better access to health checks, thereby improving access to clinical advice for patients and allowing GPs to spend more time with patients with the most complex needs.

Dr Arvind Madan, NHS England's director of primary care, said: "The pilots have shown GP workload to be eased while patients have the convenience of being seen by the right professional in a more timely way."

It is hoped that an additional 1,500 clinical pharmacists will be working in general practice by 2020-21.
