New reforms to increase number of nursing training posts

The government has announced new NHS reforms that will increase the number of training posts for nurses in order to meet rising demand for staff.

A 25 percent increase in training posts for nurses has been confirmed by the Department of Health to address workforce needs, improve working conditions and offer new routes into the profession.

Funding will be allocated for the clinical placements required for an additional 5,170 pre-registration nurse degrees from 2018, while a further 5,000 nursing associates will be trained through the apprentice route in 2018, with an additional 7,500 in 2019.

Moreover, a new shortened nurse degree apprenticeship route will be introduced for qualified nursing associates who seek to work towards full Nursing Midwifery Council registered nurse status.

The government will also work with higher education institutes to devise new approaches to delivering formal classroom teaching within employers' facilities.

Health secretary Jeremy Hunt said: "This represents the biggest increase in nurse training places in the history of the NHS – and we will make sure that many of the additional places go to healthcare assistants training on hospital sites."
